Hot Induction Bend is a technique used to bend's the pipes from their original shape to the desired shape. Inductors are used to heat the pipe and then bends it to the needed levels. Two clamps are involved in holding the pipe and bending while the inductors heat the pipe locally. The advantage of induction bending is that it could bend pipes without altering the diameter of the pipe.

There are different levels of induction bending depending on the radius of the bend. The 5d Hot Induction Bend means that the bends has been bent to have a radius of 5 times the outer diameter of the pipe. This is useful in systems where the curvature has to be smooth and the change of direction has to take place gradually. Not all materials needs all types of testing to be performed. Some are optional for manufacturer to do only when the customer particularly asks.

Hot Induction Bend Dimensions


The following measurements and specifications should apply during the bending process:
  • ✱ The wall thickness of the pipe is measured ultrasonically for each bend before it is bending at approximately 300 mm intervals along both the inner and outer radii of the bend.
  • ✱ In addition, the wall thickness of the tangents has to be measured mechanically. The measurements has to be taken at 4 equally spaced locations around the pipe's circumference at both welding ends of the bend.
  • ✱ The diameter has to be measured at the start or end of the bend locations and at all points throughout the bent portion to ensure compliance with the required tolerances.
  • ✱ For subsea flexible riser: The I.D. at any location of the bend should be more than 95.7% of the nominal internal diameter of the pipe; and not less than 98.6% of the nominal internal diameter of the flexible riser.
  • ✱ All other post-bend dimensions should be within the tolerances of ASME B16.49, Section 12 and ISO 15590-1.

Induction Bend Tangent Length


If a pipe bend with tangent length (tangent pipe bend), it suggests that this bend has the straight pipe length in the ends. Commonly a hot induction pipe bends should has some straight length within the finish, the length of this tangent can be customized as per the piping system design. This tangent length can create it easier for the bend to weld with pipes. The long bending radius and tangent straight pipe length creates the welding point less in a piping systems, it'll save the work and value within the field. The most regular pipe bends are 30 degree, 45 degree, 90 degree the bending radius are 3D, 5D, 7D, 10D, here the “D” suggests that the minimal diameter of this bend.
